Hi Musical Friends!

If you've ever sat down to study for an RCM History exam, you already know the challenge — there's a lot of detail to absorb, and dates are some of the trickiest to memorize. Composer birth and death years, composition dates, historical periods — it's a lot of specific information to hold onto, and generic study methods don't always cut it.

I'm planning to bring a lot of resources to help with exactly this, and today I'm starting with one of the most classic and effective study tools there is: flashcards.

What's Included

This free flashcard set is designed specifically for RCM Level 9 History exam prep and focuses on the Baroque Era. There are two sets included in the download:

Set 1: Important Dates

The first set covers the key dates you need to know for the Baroque period — composer birth and death dates, and composition dates for the required listening pieces. These are the details that show up on exams and are easy to mix up without focused practice.

Set 2: Composer Biographies

The second set focuses on the composers' lives — key life dates, important workplaces, and significant moves. This set covers Bach and Handel only, because Vivaldi's biography is not required for the RCM Level 9 exam. No fluff, no extra information to wade through — just what you actually need.

How to Use Them

Print the card dates page as the front and the blank cards page as the back using double-sided printing. This gives you true flashcards — you see the date prompt on the front and write the answer on the back.

Writing the answers rather than just reading them is important. The act of writing helps move information from short-term to long-term memory far more effectively than passive reading. If you find memorization difficult, start simple — just the most basic information first, and add detail in a second pass once the dates start sticking.

An answer sheet is included for reference, with the essential information filled in. You're welcome to add more detail if you'd like, but I'd recommend keeping it minimal at first, especially if you tend to feel overwhelmed by the volume of history content.

For teachers: these work beautifully laminated with dry-erase laminating sheets. Students can write, erase, and repeat as many times as needed — and your set will last for years.
