Free interactive practice tool

Free online metronome with drum beats.

Practise with a clear click or a musical groove. Compound time is grouped into the beats you actually feel, and swing is described in language students understand.

80BPM

Quarter note gets the beat

Sound

4/4: Four quarter-note beats per measure.

Optional practice mode

Tempo ladder

Build speed gradually. You decide whether the repetition was successful; the ladder handles the counting and tempo changes.

Made for teaching

Less setup. More playing.

Compound time that makes sense

In 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8, BPM follows the dotted-quarter-note beat. The visual pulse shows two, three or four large beats, each divided into three.

Swing without the math

Choose straight, light, medium or triplet swing. Swing affects the paired subdivisions in simple time; compound time already has a three-part division.

Click or groove

Use the click for precision or switch to a simple drum beat when a student needs to experience the pulse in a more musical context.
